She had her back to him when he reached the top of the stairs. She was looking toward the beach and the colorful cloud cover, which seemed to show off for her in a spectacular fashion.
Ethan took a deep breath of relief at seeing she was alone.
“So, you found it.”
“Oh, you’re back,” she called out to him without turning around.
“Yeah,” he said, walking toward her.
“Sorry, I just needed a little air. It’s beautiful here isn’t it?”
“My little slice of heaven.”
“Avra stopped by.”
“Yeah?” He was standing next to her now, looking out at the sky.
“Mmm hmm. She had some pain pills she thought you should have for, well, she didn’t say what. I’m assuming they’re for your hands, maybe.”
He turned, wanting to see her face and noticed she had her arms wrapped around her waist and no coat. Fool, she’s holding herself because she’s cold. Removing his coat, he put it over her shoulders and wrapped the front of it close.
“Yeah. Avra’s good people. She owns a neighborhood nail salon. She’s great at reflexology. I sometimes go to her when the pain is bad. I was there yesterday . . . before I came to see you. The pills are normal for pain, but they come with something that makes it easy on your stomach too.”
“Ahh . . . ”
He waited a beat. Then two . . .
“You know you can ask me anything, Serena.”
“Excuse me?”
“I mean it. You can ask me anything you want.”
Serena laughed; a light airy sound that made him smile despite how deadly serious he was feeling in that moment.
“I don’t want to ask you anything, Ethan, particularly something that’s none of my business.”
“But that’s just it,” he said taking a step closer to her. “Right now, everything about me is your business.”
“What on earth does that mean?”
“Look, I know what I’m asking of you. I know I’m asking to intrude on your family unit. Your family. I’m asking you to give me permission to be in the life of two people that you care about more than anyone in the world. It’s disruptive. It may not work well. I know it worries you. And if in the course of trying to figure this out, there is something you need to know about me—anything—all you have to do is ask, and I’ll tell you.”
Her eyes had widened as he spoke as if what he was saying surprised her or maybe she just didn’t believe him. He hoped she did because he meant every word.
“This is important okay? You feel me?”
She nodded. Then she licked her lips, something he hadn’t seen her do in a long time.
Damn.
His body had an immediate coital memory and response to it as if someone had turned the clock back twenty or thirty years. He took a step back and did everything he could to suppress it.
“I’m going to head back down and start dinner. You can stay up here if you want or come join me.”
“I’ll join you.”
